School Improment Plan

Goal: All students will improve problem-solving skills across the curriculum throughout the school.

Essence: All students will become effective problem solvers by using organizational strategies, distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant data, and employing social skills to better social relationships

Interventions:


1. Students will use a variety of tools to organize information.
2. Students will analyze relevant and irrelevant data.
3. Students will learn to solve conflicts in multiple settings.

Activities to Implement Intervation #1:

Students will use a variety of tools to organize information.

1. Teachers will teach and use graphic organizers across the curriculum.
KWL, Venn, compare/contrast, webbing, Cornell notes, chart, graph, flow, story board, etc…
2. All students will learn and use graphic organizers across the curriculum.
3. Teachers will teach and model notebook format
4. All students will organize materials into a notebook.
5. Teachers will teach the use of the planner.
6. All students will use the school wide planner for assignments, homework, tests, reminders, activities, and events.
7. All teachers will display problem-solving posters in the classroom and teach a problem solving process.

Possibilities are:

-Find important information
-Select a strategy
-Carry out the plan
-Evaluate results

8. Students will learn to use the problem solving process to improve organizing skills.
9. 8 th graders will participate in the Career Launch Program.
10. 7 th and 8 th graders will formulate a six-year educational plan.
11. Teachers will organize curriculum in the form of curriculum mapping, essential elements, and common assessments

Activities to Implement Intervation #2:

Students will analyze relevant and irrelevant data

1. Teachers track missing assignments of D and F students.
2. Students and teams will evaluate reasons for student failure.
3. Teachers will teach test-taking skills.
4. Students will apply test-taking skills on a variety of Normed and Criterion referenced tests.
5. All students will learn to use problem-solving skills by using inquiry and identifying relevant/irrelevent data from readings, graphs tables etc...

6. All teachers will teach, model, and use best practices tools for the analysis of data. A few of these tools are:

-Skimming, highlighting, Cornell notes, pre, during, & post reading skills
- Analyzing patterns, cooperative learning, mnemonic devices, etc….

7. All students will learn and use best practice tools for the analysis of data
8. Teachers will analyze and develop local assessments.

Activities to Implement Intervation #3:

1. Students will be offered peer-mediation as a source of problem-solving.
2. Counselors will track the use of the mediation process.
3. Students will participate and view role-playing solutions to real life middle school problems using school news, drama, and selected readings within curricular areas.
4. Administrators and Counselors will track disciplinary actions through a locally developed discipline program.
5. Small group counseling will be offered to all students.
6. Structured social game program will be offered to all students at lunch.
7. Character Education will be incorporated school wide.
8. At-Risk students will participate in: Read 180/Mentor Program.
